Making Our Lives. A Study: A Conference on Feminist Criticism and Grptivity will be held in Athens, Ohio on March 4-6. Featured speakers will be Marge Piercy, Toni Cade Bambara and Carolyn Heilbrun. The confwrence, sponsored by Ohio University and the North Central Women's Studies Association and organized by the Ohio University Women's Studies Program, will include readings. lectures, panels on such topics as teminist literary theory, minority women writers. and Appalachian Women, as well as a symposium on the future of feminist studies and Meminist art with Piercy. Bambara and Heilbrun. Up to two hours of Ohio University English Women's Studies credit. either graduate or undergaduate. may be received in connection with the conference. the Arma Race (STAR) is the call of a major national campaign for neage to be launcheḍ March 8, International Women's Day, by the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF). Cleveland area STARS will host a press conference at 11:00 at Church Hause, 2230 Euclid Avenue, to promote their message: a call for goodfaith negotiations between the United States and the Soviet Union to stop the arms race. The STAR campaign aims to register 1,000,000 people against the arms race by signing a STAR card and giving $1 to support the work of WILPF. The campaign will run from International Women's Day 1982 to International Women's Day 1983, when signed STAR cards will first be shown to President Reagan at the White House and then delivered to NATO headquarters in Brussels. Women from the Akron community and the University of Akron will join March 7-13, 1982 to celebrate Women's History Week. Various pro-

grams are planned, including an opening event at the Quaker Square Hilton on March 7 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. featuring an information fair highlighting the history and contributions of Akron's women's groups to the community, a fashion show of historic clothing and an informal reception with a cash bar. National Women's History Week, March 7-13, will be celebrated in Lexington, Kentucky with a full week of activities at the University of Kentucky. Highlight will be the keynote address by Rep. Pat Schroeder, a Democrat from Colorado known for her advocacy of equality for women. The week will include slide presentations, a photographic display on women in the labor movement. and information booths. Also, Lucy Massie Phenix will give a talk at a screening of the acclaimed documentary film "Word Is Out," which she co-produced; Phenix is well-known for her work on "Rosie the Riveter". She knew what she wanted...
Amelia Earhart, president of the 99's, women pilot's organization, poses with three members for a benefit roller skating party held in 1933 to raise funds for a plane. Left to right: Earhart (1897-1937) often expressed that women can and must take on challenges. She set an example in her love of flying, as she said, "for the fun of it.” Elvy Kalep, the first civilian pilot in Estonia, created aviation books & toys, and was an artist & linguist; Frances Marsalis (ca. 1890-1934), racing pilot, set the endurance record of 10 days aloft; Betty Gillies (b. 1908) demonstrated & sold planes, & was a commander in the WASPS. These women made a major contribution to. herstory, because they knew who they were and what they wanted.
